This is a stunning suite of aquatinted landscapes by the celebrated engraver Archibald Robertson from "Short Descriptive Account of the Pyrenean Part of Bigorre."

Archibald Robertson was an accomplished painter and engraver who specialized in aquatint landscapes. He was active in London between 1765 and 1786 and is recorded as exhibiting three landscape paintings at the Royal Academy between 1772 and 1775. Not much is known of Robertson's history, since he is often confused with the miniature painter Archibald Robertson, who was highly acclaimed in both England and America. Given the date, style, and medium of this suite of aquatints, it would seem more likely that these picturesque landscapes were executed by the London-based Robertson, who was known to be an accomplished aquatinter as well as a print seller. These handsome prints depict various sites of beauty throughout Europe. There are two proof prints, which makes it difficult to decipher their exact location, but the other four prints depict places famed for their natural beauty. Robertson has chosen to picture the celebrated Wallenstadt Lake in Switzerland, a favorite summer resort and eighteenth century tourist destination. He has also included a stunning view of the natural bridge in Veja, outside Verona, a tranquil view of the famous spa town Recoaro, in the province of Veneto, and a charming image of the Roman ruins in Aix-les-bains in France. The two proof titles are sites in the Pyrenees.

The complete work consisted of seventeen prints. These were published between 1783-87 under the titleShort Descriptive Account of the Pyrenean Part of Bigorre. From which Twelve of the Subjects intended for this Publications are selected. The selection of sites is somewhat random, moving from Spain to France to Sicily, though they are all within what could be called a western Mediterranean region. The unifying factor is Robertson's extraordinary ability as a landscape engraver.

ROBERTSON, Archibald (1765-1835, artist and publisher). - William ROLLINSON (1762-1842, engraver and publisher)

Alexander Hamilton, Major General of the Armies of the United States of America. Secretary of the Treasury &c. &c.

New York: published at the Columbia Academy of Painting & by William Rollinson, 1st September 1804. Stipple engraving by William Rollinson, after Archibald Robertson. First state of two. Sheet size: 21 15/16 x 16 5/8 inches.

A very fine memorial portrait of Alexander Hamilton: the first United States Secretary of the Treasury. "The finest American stipple engraving" (Shadwell)

Alexander Hamilton (1755 or 1757-1804) died of the wounds he received in a duel with Vice-President Aaron Burr on 12 July 1804. Hamilton was a leading American statesman, financier and political theorist, a constitutional lawyer par excellence, and a man with an international reputation. Tallyrand once said: "I consider Napoleon, Fox, and Hamilton the three greatest men of our epoch, and if I were forced to decide between the three, I would give without hesitation the first place to Hamilton." The present work, a joint publishing venture between artist and engraver, was published within eight weeks of Hamilton's death and was clearly intended as a memorial to a man who was also an important figure within the State of New York.

Archibald Robertson was born in Scotland, and received his initial art training there before moving to London where he studied with both Sir Joshua Reynolds and Benjamin West. He was invited to America by Dr. John Kemp of Columbia College and arrived in 1791. In 1792 his brother Alexander, also an artist, joined him and together they operated the Columbian Academy of Painting, one of the earliest art schools in America. The Academy is given as one of the two addresses from which the present print was available. The other address is that of the English-born engraver William Rollinson.

RODRIGUES, Joćo Barbosa (1842-1909)

Sertum palmarum Brasiliensium ou relation des palmiers nouveaux du Brésil découverts, décrits et dessinés d'après nature

Brussels: imprimerie typographique veuve Monnom, 1903. 2 volumes, broadsheet (24 x 16 3/4 inches). Half-titles. Photogravure portrait of the author, on india paper, mounted, 174 fine chromolithographed plates (26 views of whole trees, 148 botanical drawings of leaves and other details), all by J. Goffin fils after Rodrigues, 1p. printed facsimile of a document signed by 24 members of 2nd 'Congres Cientifico Latino Americano', occasional half-tone illustrations. Unbound as issued in original green cloth portfolios by Carabin-Schildknecht of Brussels, the cloth grained in imitation of cayman, aligator or snake skin, the upper covers with large onset red cloth panels elaborately blocked in gilt with an overall art nouveau design by Francois Wissaert of Brussels, incorporating the title, author's name and an emblematic scene featuring Amazonian Indians, cloth ties.

A fine copy of one of the two greatest works on the palm trees of Brazil, illustrated with spectacular semi-abstract images of almost 150 species

The plates divide naturally into two groups: the first smaller group is of views of entire trees, often in their natural setting. These have a naive immediacy and vitality that is charming. The second much larger group of detailed drawings follow the correct guidelines for technical botanical drawings, but, mainly as a result of the need to fold the large leaves to be depicted, they achieve a wonderful semi-abstract status that recalls the photographic work of Man Ray, or painterly images from artists ranging from Georgia O'Keefe to Victor Vasarely and the 'op art' of the sixties.

The book was the result of almost thirty years of field work by Barbosa Rodrigues, where, working under extreme conditions, he always tried to produce a record of the plants close to where he had found them. Following in the footsteps of Carl von Martius's Historia naturalis palmarum (Munich, 1823-50), Barbosa Rodrigues notes that he studied and described more than 100 species that were new and unknown to science. Barbosa Rodrigues, Brazilian born botanist and traveller, collected widely in Brazil between 1868 and 1897. Much of his early work was on orchids, and by 1869 he had completed over 800 plates and designs: this work was never published (the albums of drawings are now in the library of the Rio de Janeiro Botanical Garden), and he turned to the study of palms. As he notes in the introduction to the present work: 'Aux Orchidées j'ai sacrifié les joies de ma jeunesse, aux Palmiers les loisirs l'âge mûr' ['To Orchids I sacrificed the joys of my youth, to Palms the leisure of middle age']. He served as director of the Manaos botanical museum from 1883-1889, and was the first director of the botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro from 1889 until his death in 1909. Despite his almost ceaseless travelling within his own country, the only trip he ever made to Europe was to oversee the publication of the present work. That Barbosa Rodrigues should choose Belgium to publish his work is perhaps at first sight surprising, but Belgium in general, and Ghent and Brussels in particular were, at the time, world-renowned centres of excellence in the fields of botanical research and publishing. As the present work so ably demonstrates, a number of the best botanical chromolithographers in the world were then working in Brussels.

First edition of this classic narrative of the French and Indian War, complete with the half-title and the two advertisement leaves at the rear which are not always present: here with an interesting provenance

Rogers acted as a scout for the 1755 expedition against Crown Point, and in 1756 became captain of an independent company of Rangers. He made scores of raids against the French in New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania, going as far west as the shores of Lake Huron. His exploits, detailed in this book, made him the most romantic and famous figure of the war in America. The book has served as the basis for much romantic fiction, most notably Kenneth Roberts' Northwest Passage.

Colonel Thomas Aspinwall was born in Brookline and at the time of his death in 1876 in Boston he was the oldest surviving officer who had fought in the War of 1812. He also served as United States Consul in London from 1815 to 1853, and was a noted bibliophile whose collection was described in A catalogue of books relating to America, in the collection of Colonel Aspinwall (Paris: 1831). The Colonel's gift of this book in 1859 ensured that it was not included in the auction sale of his library held in Boston in May 1879.

ROLFE, Henry Leonidas (1824-1881)

H.L. Rolfe's Studies of Game. Snipes, Pheasant, Hare, &c. &c.

London: Messrs. William Tegg & Co., 1 August 1857. Tinted lithograph, coloured by hand, by Jane Hunt, printed by M. & N. Hanhart (expert repairs, one touching image area). Image size (including text): 19 1/2 x 29 1/2 inches. Sheet size: 24 1/2 x 33 1/4 inches.

A fine image after one of the greatest painters of sporting subjects of the Victorian era.

Rolfe, perhaps the best known member of a family of sporting artists, exhibited widely in Britain during the middle of the 19th century. Specialising in 'still-life' scenes of animals and fish, he made a considerable name for himself with his highly accurate depictions: here the anatomy of each species is absolutely correct, something that the Victorian sportsman/art collector would have demanded.

Jane Hunt is the lithographic artist who, in conjunction with Messrs. Hanhart, one of the two of three top firms of lithographic printers working in London at the time, has taken Rolfe's image and translated it with absolute fidelity: the day's 'bag' of a long ago Victorian sportsman here immortalised by the happy meeting of the arts of the painter and lithographer.

A landmark image in the iconography of the American Revolution.

The first London edition of this very important print of the Battle of Bunker Hill - an iconic image and a landmark in the pictorial history of the American Revolution. Though the American forces were defeated at Bunker Hill it served as a great moral victory for the rebellious colonists. This print provided Americans with a timely report on this first major test of their armed forces.

Lincoln Diamant calls Romans' view "an idealized and striking panorama of what rapidly became known as the Battle of Bunker Hill." It was also "a major creative breakthrough" for Romans, "whose previous figurative work on copper had been limited to awkward cartouches, unusual plants and the heads of Florida natives." Diamant doubts that Romans observed the Battle of Bunker Hill firsthand, but Fowble contends that he was in fact there. Whichever is the case, Romans' rendering of the battle ably compresses the events of the day into a dramatic and striking image. The view shows Charlestown and Boston on fire in the background, with General Gage's British forces moving stolidly up Breed's Hill against the hastily-constructed patriot fort at the crest. The British had decided to set fire to Charlestown and Boston in order to drive out rebel snipers. The British frigate, Somerset, is shown in the waters between the two cities and Continental Army leader Major General Israel Putnam is pictured in the left side of the image leading his men from horseback.

The present image is the very rare 1776 London version of Romans' print. Stauffer notes that "this London edition is much better engraved" than the extremely rare 1775 Philadelphia edition, which is virtually unobtainable. Stokes agrees on both the quality of the London engraving and the unobtainability of the Philadelphia edition. "The View was also quickly copied half-size [actually on a much smaller scale] by Robert Aiken, another Philadelphia engraver, publisher and bookseller, for the September issue of his successful Pennsylvania Magazine, or American Monthly Museum edited by Thomas Paine...In June of the following year, the View was re-engraved in London by Wallace & Stonehouse...It has rapidly become an icon for both sides of the Revolution" - Diamant.

Bernard Romans was a navigator, surveyor, cartographer, naturalist, engineer, soldier, self-promoter and writer. Initially in British employ, Romans threw in his lot with the American patriots. Unfortunately, his abrasive character and bold opinions invariably led him into conflict, and the frenetic pace of his life meant that his ambition usually outstripped both his abilities and his purse. Despite all this he managed to find the time and money to publish a number of maps and prints. Among the most important of these are this view of the Battle of Bunker Hill, and a map of the area around Boston, The Seat of Civil War in America, which he dedicated to John Hancock. The New York Mercury described Romans as "the most skillful draughtsman in all America" (Stauffer).

ROMANS, Bernard (circa 1720 - 1784)

Connecticut, and Parts adjacent.

Amsterdam: Covens and Mortier and Covens Junior, 1780. Copper-engraved map, engraved by H. Klockhoff, after Bernard Romans, with original outline colour, in very good condition, period-style black and gold frame. Sheet size: 22 x 26 1/4 inches.

A very rare and highly attractive map of Connecticut and Long Island

This beautiful and important map was one of four of Bernard Romans' maps of various parts of the American colonies to be re-engraved and published by the renowned Dutch firm of cartographers Covens and Mortier and Covens Junior. The present map is taken from the extremely rare 1777 map currently known in only four examples. No copies of this 1780 version are recorded as having sold at auction in the past thirty years. Connecticut is shown divided into six counties, each of which is outlined in colour, with the main towns coloured in red. The beautiful vignette-cartouche containing the title (in the lower right corner) is of a naturalistically presented Connecticut village scene.

Born in Holland, Bernard Romans arrived in America in 1757 and spent a number of years working in the southeast. His two large `whole sheet maps' of Florida were completed in 1774, and at about this time he moved to Hartford, Connecticut. During the Revolutionary War he served in New York on the American side. All of his maps are extremely scarce, in most cases being known by only a few copies, and it is only through re-engraved versions such as the present example that the present generation of map collectors can hope to own examples of this important American cartographer's work.

ROMNEY, After George (1734-1802)

Shakespeare Nursed by Tragedy and Comedy Engraved from the Original Picture... In the Posession of Francis Newbery, Esqr.

London: J. & J. Boydell, 1 December 1803. Stipple engraving, printed in colours and finished by hand, by Benjamin Smith. Image size (including text): 10 1/4 x 12 3/8 inches. Sheet size: 12 3/4 x 14 inches approx.

Fine copy of this charming allegorical work after Romney.

"Few painters have been more essentially artistic than Romney; all his better portraits embody a pictorial scheme. He was a good draughtsman, a sound painter, an agreeable colourist. He had an eye for woman's beauty, and could enhance it. His slightest sketches have a vivid consistency which is almost peculiar to themselves. His vision was so artistic that his work was complete at every stage. Even the empty canvas about his unfinished heads seems to form an indispensable part
